t looked like the coast was clear. Mama eagle had left to hunt a little while back. If Timaeus had it figured right, it'd be at least a half hour before she returned. Daddy eagle was asleep on a branch outside the nest. What luck! The old male hardly ever left the eggs uncovered, especially if his mate wasn't there to watch them. To Tim-Tim, as his friends called him, it looked like if he was really quiet, and really, really careful, he could sneak into the nest and leave his paw-prints on the eggs with no problem at all! He would be a hero!

The trouble was, now that the time had come to do it, his legs were shaking so hard, the short climb between him and the nest made it look miles away. Serves me right, he thought, looking at the branch where his friends were clustered below. They sat almost absolutely still, watching with wide eyes and only slightly twitching noses.

After taking some slow, deep breaths to steady his quivering nerves, Tim-Tim put out a careful paw and began his ascent. It had been so easy, bragging about the times he'd climbed up to watch the eagle's nest, hoping to be there for the hatching. But, right then and there, he was kind of wishing he'd never mentioned it.
